What Attracts Mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes are attracted to standing water sources that they can use as breeding grounds. This means that ponds, marshes, pools, birdbaths, and more places that could be right around your property or in your backyard are vulnerable.

When looking to feed, mosquitoes are attracted to your blood, blood type, and breath. It is still not entirely clear why some people are targeted by mosquitoes more often than others, but we do know that mosquitoes will feed whenever they get the chance.

Why Are Mosquitoes Living in My Yard?

Mosquitoes are drawn to areas with accessible standing water sources. During the spring and summer, they will be out and about in Moore County looking for suitable breeding grounds. They are often found near gardens, playsets, gutters, bird baths, pools, and other things that hold standing water in our backyards. Mosquitoes are most active once temperatures are sitting above 50 degrees Fahrenheit consistently, so you’ll see increased activity around your yard in the spring and summer in our area.

What Makes Humans Attractive to Mosquitoes?

Although we all know someone who is a “mosquito magnet,” there is still a shroud of mystery over what makes certain people more attractive to mosquitoes than others. However, we do know that mosquitoes are attracted to three main qualities:

  1. Breath. Female mosquitoes have special organs and long antennae that allow them to pick out increases in carbon dioxide around them. Mosquitoes can detect high levels of carbon dioxide from over 150 feet away, so this usually accounts for the initial attraction to nearby humans.
  2. Blood. Female mosquitoes need blood to reproduce properly, and we all have it. But are mosquitoes more attracted to some people than others based on their blood type? Researches have found some evidence indicating that individuals with Type O blood are more prone to bites than people with Type A. Other genetic factors may also play a role in mosquito preference.
  3. Scent. Uric acid, lactic acid, and ammonia emitted by glands in your skin seem to attract mosquitoes. Even wearing floral fragrances like perfumes can attract mosquitoes! The combination of high body temperature and perspiration also attracts them.
